C# ASP.NET Calculate Age

Calculating age in years from a date of birth is a pretty simple thing to do. Here is a function for you to do it.

public int CalculateAge(DateTime birthDate)
{
// cache the current time
DateTime now = DateTime.Today; // today is fine, don’t need the timestamp from now
// get the difference in years
int years = now.Year – birthDate.Year;
// subtract another year if we’re before the
// birth day in the current year
if (now.Month < birthDate.Month || (now.Month == birthDate.Month && now.Day < birthDate.Day))
–years;

return years;
}

Horse Riding Holidays

We often work on websites where a client’s product will get us thinking that we’d like some of that.

One such recent website has been Globetrotting. They offer horse riding holidays around the world. Now, I’m not a horsey person but some of the photos on the website are just awesome. Go visit the site and have a look for yourselves. Each location page has a different slideshow to help you pick the location that you like the look of best.

Windows 7 in Australia

Do yourself a favour and DO NOT install Windows 7 if your broadband provider is Bigpond (Telstra).

Currently, a lot of the Telstra modems do not have compatible Windows 7 drivers. Sure, there are workarounds for people with a bit of technical knowledge but for the average Joe it’s not a good idea. Also, it would be nice for places like Harvey Norman to tell people who are buying new computers about the problem. What could be worse for the man off the street than buying a new laptop for his kid as a Christmas present only to find out that it doesn’t work on Christmas Day..?

If you’re unsure about things visit http://www.bigpond.com/internet/plans/wireless/system-requirements/ for more details.

Aboriginal Art

A new aboriginal art gallery has opened up in Palm Cove. Pandanus Gallery deal direct with the indigenous artists and provide exhibitions and promotions for upcoming aboriginal artists.

We’ve been lucky enough to create their website which links with the Artists Management System used by aboriginal communities throughout Australia.

If you’re up in Palm Cove, check it out. They’re on the Esplanade at the Drift shopping complex.

Simple SEO Tips

Some may say – there is nothing simple about search engine optimisation. However, whether SEO is easy or not really depends on the particular website. In most cases SEO is not difficult as long as sufficient time and effort is invested into the project.
1. Create webpage titles related to targeted keywords.
2. Make your meta description unique for each webpage.
3. Use most important keywords in webpage name or URL.
4. Use cascading style sheets (CSS) rather then tables.
5. Add H1 tags preferably towards the top of each webpage.
6. Implement breadcrumbs functionality on your website.
7. Analyze your targeted keywords using Google suggest.
8. Implement the sitemap as text links.
9. Put CSS and JavaScript into external file.
10. Describe your images with the use of the alt tags.
11. Make sure your site logo alt tag contains your keywords.
12. Avoid automatic directory submission.
13. Find quality links to your website. Not easy.
14. Don’t use same anchor text in all your inbound links.
15. Use deep linking to many webpages on your website.

Worldwide Travel Insurance

When you go on holidays this year remember to buy travel insurance. You only have to check the smartraveller website to read the horror stories that people go through (including falling through toilet seats) to realise that it’s a good idea. For a reasonably small outlay (unless you’re going to somewhere with a war on) you get the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll get flown home for nothing if it all goes pear shaped.

A good place to buy your insurance is at Travel Insurance Australia. They have policies from several major insurance compenies listed on the one website so that you can pick the one that best suits your needs. They also give you a discount so that you buy from them cheaper than you can buy direct from the insurance companies.

Google Chrome Leads the Way

Google Chrome is turning out to be a godsend. Currently, we’re finding it more stable than Firefox 3; less buggy than Safari for Windows; and simply nicer than IE7.

Thanks Google.

Domain Name Shake-Up

The net’s regulator Icann has proposed a complete overhaul of the way people navigate the internet.

They will vote to decide if the strict rules on so-called top level domain names, such as .com or .uk, can be relaxed.

The plans would allow firms to use their brands as web addresses while individuals could use their name.
