Worldwide Travel Insurance

When you go on holidays this year remember to buy travel insurance. You only have to check the smartraveller website to read the horror stories that people go through (including falling through toilet seats) to realise that it’s a good idea. For a reasonably small outlay (unless you’re going to somewhere with a war on) you get the peace of mind of knowing that you’ll get flown home for nothing if it all goes pear shaped.

A good place to buy your insurance is at Travel Insurance Australia. They have policies from several major insurance compenies listed on the one website so that you can pick the one that best suits your needs. They also give you a discount so that you buy from them cheaper than you can buy direct from the insurance companies.

Google Chrome Leads the Way

Google Chrome is turning out to be a godsend. Currently, we’re finding it more stable than Firefox 3; less buggy than Safari for Windows; and simply nicer than IE7.

Thanks Google.

Domain Name Shake-Up

The net’s regulator Icann has proposed a complete overhaul of the way people navigate the internet.

They will vote to decide if the strict rules on so-called top level domain names, such as .com or .uk, can be relaxed.

The plans would allow firms to use their brands as web addresses while individuals could use their name.

Amazon Video Streaming

Amazon, the largest internet retailer, will launch a streaming video service in the next few weeks to augment its digital offerings, the company’s chief executive said on Wednesday.
Jeff Bezos, speaking at The Wall Street Journal’s three-day D: All Things Digital conference taking place north of San Diego, did not elaborate, and a company spokeswoman would not provide more information.
The Seattle-based company has been beefing up its digital media offerings in order to better compete with rivals such as Apple, which dominates the category with the popular iTunes music download service.
Besides recently launching an electronic book reader, the Kindle, Amazon has been building a digital music store and now offers downloadable movies, television shows and videos on its website.
It also has a deal with TiVo, maker of the popular digital video recorder, that allows users to rent videos from Amazon’s Unbox service and watch them on their televisions.
Amazon is not alone in looking at streaming online video, allowing viewers to essentially rent movies via the Web rather than download large files to store on personal computers or other devices.
On Wednesday, the chief executive of DVD-by-mail company Netflix, Reed Hastings, said the company is currently funding streaming video in order to “give us years of subscriber and earnings expansion.” Hastings spoke at the company’s investor day in San Francisco.
“Once we’re in streaming … we can attract well beyond 20 million subscribers worldwide,” Hastings said.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Tools

I thought I’d share with you a few tools that I use when going about my day-to-day search engine optimisation (SEO) business.

This tool tells you how your website ranks in a variation of Google data centres. Usually, if your ranking results differ through the data centres then this means that indexing is usually taking place.

Link popularity is important because it is a major factor used by search engines to determine a website’s position in the search results.

This tool will automatically check the Google page rank of any website.

This tool will query Google’s various data centers to check for any changes in PageRank values for a given URL. Usually all data centers will output the same, but if queried during an update, you might get a glimpse of any upcoming changes in your chosen URL’s PageRank value.

A website’s age is one of the major factors used to rank it in the search engines. Use this tool to find the age of any domain, including your competitors’ or ones you might want to purchase. Older domains may get a slight edge in search engine rankings.

I hope these tools prove useful.
